No Printer After Vista Home SP2 Update? Group Policy Doesn’t Allow NT4 Printers
OK, finally a post about computers huh… well I could write one every day. Even though I got layed off my job as IT and Network Administrator, I seem to run into computer problems every day. This time my wife’s computer was acting up and since I haven’t really spent a lot of time on her computer lately, I decided to update it a little bit. I went to “Windows Update” to see what it needed and found that Service Pack 2 was available. So I downloaded it. Next thing you know my wife’s printer isn’t working. OK, well, the printer had been running real slow for a while especially on the network (LAN). So I kinda wanted to reinstall it anyway. So I went ahead and deleted it and tried to reinstall it. Low and behold… it won’t install now because a security policy on my computer is now blocking it.
It’s an HP printer so the first thing I tried to do was go on HP’s site and download a fresh driver for it. No good. The most recent driver update was from 2010 so I knew that wasn’t going to help. Next thing I always do is start googling to find someone else who’s had this problem and see how to fix it. At first I thought it was going to be easy. I found a site that said this:
“As mentioned in the error message itself that ‘policy enable on your computer that blocks NT 4.0 drivers, we can disable the policy in windows vista computer.
Follow the steps to disable NT4.0 drivers policy.
1) Go to Run (or Start Search) type ‘ mmc ‘, press Enter. Continue for UAC.
2) Click on File and Add/Remove Snap In, as shown below.
3) Select ‘Group Policy Object Editor’ in left side and Press Add Button.
Leave Local Computer in Next screen and Click Finish and OK.
4) Then Expand to ‘ Local Computer Policy’ -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates and Click on Printers.
5) Look for “Disallow installation of Printers using kernel-mode divers” in right side and double click on it.
6) Select Disable and Press OK. Close the console also.
After disabled this policy to allow NT 4.0 kernel mode printer drivers, you vista computer can have old network shard printers.”
This sounds great but I only got to step 3 because there wasn’t any “Group Policy Object Editor” listed in the “Add/Remove snap In” dialog box. After more research I found out that this doesn’t work with Vista Home/Premium operating systems which is what my wife has. Hers is a 64 bit also. I kept looking a found a program on the Geeks site that you install and it automatically puts a Policy editor in the control panel. Didn’t work. My googling efforts also landed me a few Microsoft downloads that looked promising to fix the problem but everything I tried had compatibility issues with my wife’s computer.
Finally, I decided that I was going to have to remove Service Pack 2 to get the printer to work again. So I went to the control panel > programs and features > “view installed updates” and started looking for the Service Pack 2 update. There was such a long list that I decided to find it by the date it was installed. Low and behold…(I say that alot) there was another update that was installed at the same time on the same date unbeknownst to me. And guess what… it was a security update. So I uninstalled the security update first just to see if that would do the trick and (you guessed it) low and behold, I was able to then install my wife’s printer again. Yea! It was an easy solution after all.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
